The short answer

What is AI bathroom design?

AI bathroom design redesigns a photo of your own bathroom. You upload the photo, pick a style, and in about 30 seconds you see the same bathroom with new tile, a new vanity, new fixtures, paint and lighting. The shape of the room, the window and the layout stay where they are.

Its main use is planning a remodel. Most bathroom regrets come from choices that looked different in a showroom than on your own walls: a tile that turns busy across a whole wall, a vanity finish that fights the floor. Seeing the finished look on your bathroom first costs nothing; finding out after the tile is set costs a lot.

Most useful for: planning a bathroom remodel, comparing tile and color on your actual walls, getting remodel ideas in minutes, and showing your contractor what you want, all before you spend a dollar.

№ 01AI bathroom designs from a real photo

One bathroom, six remodels.

An ordinary hall bathroom, photographed on a phone and redesigned by the app in six styles. The window, the tub alcove and the layout stay; tile, vanity, fixtures and color change.

The bathroom we started with

An oak vanity with a cultured-marble top, a Hollywood light bar, an almond tub-and-shower combo with a curtain and beige floor tile: the late-1990s bathroom a lot of American homes still have. Every result below is this exact photo.

№ 02How it works

How AI bathroom remodel works, in about a minute.

  1. 01

Take one photo from the doorway

Stand in the doorway or a corner and shoot toward the vanity or the tub, so the walls, fixtures and as much floor as possible are in the frame. Turn on every light; bathrooms are darker than they look. A phone photo is enough.

  2. 02

    Pick a style

Start with one of the six free styles, or use any of the 75+ with the pass. With the pass you can also describe what you want in your own words, like a white tile shower with a wood vanity, and choose what may change.

  3. 03

    Compare, then refine

The redesign comes back in about 30 seconds. Compare it with your photo, try another style on the same bathroom, and with the pass change one thing at a time: the wall color, the vanity, the lighting.

№ 03What it can do for your remodel

Decide before the tile is ordered.

The same small bathroom redesigned in the free Sunwashed Terracotta style✨ Sunwashed Terracotta
A small rental bathroom in the free Sunwashed Terracotta style: same tub, same window, a much warmer room.

Plan a full bathroom remodel

See the finished room before you hire anyone. Settle the style, the colors and the overall look from a picture of your own bathroom, not from a showroom floor.

Compare tile and color

Try different looks on your actual walls and floor. What seems calm on a 12-inch sample can look busy across a whole wall, and the reverse.

Paint color visualizer

Try a new vanity, fixtures or lighting

See a new vanity, a different mirror or warmer lighting without buying anything. With the pass, the edit tools change one element at a time, so you see what each change does.

Brief your contractor

Bring the render to the first meeting. It shows style, materials and mood faster than words or a board of other people's bathrooms. It is a picture, not a spec, so your contractor still measures and prices the job.

Make a small bathroom feel bigger

Lighter colors, larger tiles, a bigger mirror and a wall-hung vanity usually open up a small bath. Test which ones help yours before you commit.

Rental-friendly updates

Can't retile? Keep the tile and let only paint, the mirror, lighting, hardware and textiles change. A new shower curtain and a better light fixture go further than most people expect.

№ 04Every kind of bathroom

Primary bath to powder room, it starts from yours.

The AI works from your photo, so it adapts to the bathroom you have: its size, its window and its layout.

Vanity, tub and shower

Primary bathroom

The master bath has the most room to experiment: a double vanity, a freestanding tub, a bigger shower. See the options on your own room before you buy anything.

Toilet and sink only

Powder room

Guests see it, you spend little time in it, and it is small enough to be daring. Dark walls, a statement mirror and warm light work better here than anywhere else.

Often 5 × 8 feet

Small bathroom

The standard American full bath. Every choice shows, so test which colors, tile sizes and vanity styles make yours feel larger before you commit.

Tile, glass, fixtures

Walk-in shower

Compare tile, glass and fixture finishes in your shower's actual footprint. Most useful right before you order tile, when changing your mind is still free.

Second full bath

Guest bathroom

Often the last room to get attention. A style update or a single change, like paint and a new mirror, shows you what is worth the spend.

Paint, light, hardware

Rental bathroom

See what removable updates would do before you spend anything: peel-and-stick, a new mirror, warmer bulbs, new towels and hardware.

№ 06Bathroom design tips

Six things designers check in every bathroom.

Use them to judge any remodel idea, ours or anyone else's.

01

Keep the plumbing where it is

Moving a toilet, a drain or a shower valve is one of the costliest parts of a remodel. A new look with the fixtures in the same places is far cheaper, and that is exactly what a photo redesign shows you.

02

Light the face, not just the room

A single ceiling light throws shadows across your face at the mirror. Designers add light at the mirror, on both sides or above it, plus general light, and check the room at night.

03

Choose for water and steam

Porcelain or ceramic tile, paint made for bathrooms and an exhaust fan that actually clears the room. A beautiful finish that peels in a year is not a good choice.

04

Go bigger on tile in a small bath

Larger floor tiles mean fewer grout lines, which usually reads calmer and more open. Running the same floor tile into the shower makes the room feel bigger still.

05

Mind the clearances

US codes typically ask for at least 15 inches from the toilet's center to a side wall and 21 inches of clear space in front of it; designers prefer about 30. Check yours, and your local code, before choosing a bigger vanity.

06

Pick one star

One bold element, like patterned floor tile, a colored vanity or a statement mirror, looks better than three competing ones. Let the rest stay quiet.

Common bathroom remodel mistakes

  • Choosing tile from a small sample. A pattern that looks calm on one tile can look busy across a wall, which is why seeing it on your own photo helps.
  • Skipping or under-sizing the exhaust fan. Moisture ruins paint, grout and cabinets faster than anything else.
  • Buying a vanity before measuring the door swing and the space in front of the toilet.
  • Mixing finishes by accident. Old chrome next to new matte black or brass rarely looks planned, so choose the metals together.

№ 09AI bathroom design FAQ

Bathroom questions, answered straight.

What is AI bathroom design?

AI bathroom design uses AI to redesign a photo of your own bathroom. You upload the photo and pick a style, and in about 30 seconds you see the same bathroom with new tile, a new vanity, fixtures, paint and lighting. The room's shape, window and layout stay, so you are judging the look on your real space.

Can I redesign my bathroom from a photo?

Yes, that is how it works. Upload a photo of your bathroom, choose a style, and the app redesigns that exact room. The result keeps your bathroom's layout, window and proportions, so it is your bathroom remodeled, not a template of someone else's.

Is AI bathroom design free?

Your first design is free, with no signup and no card, in one of six free styles: Warm Minimalist, Modern Studio, Hygge Haven, Botanical Greenhouse, Sunwashed Terracotta and Velvet Nightfall. It is offered in the US, Canada, the UK and several European countries, and the free download is up to 1280px with a small watermark. The $9.99 pass gives you 30 days with all 75+ styles, the edit tools and 200 designs, paid once with nothing to cancel.

Is there a free AI bathroom design generator?

Yes. Decoratly generates a redesign of your own bathroom photo for free: one design, no account and no card. Many generators show a bathroom that is not yours; this one starts from your photo, so the result shows your real space.

What is an AI bathroom remodel preview?

It is a picture of your bathroom as it could look after a remodel, made from a photo you upload. A mood board shows other people's bathrooms; a remodel preview shows yours, with its real size, window and layout, which makes it far easier to judge and to explain to a contractor.

How long does an AI bathroom design take?

About 30 seconds from upload to result. You can compare several styles on the same bathroom in a few minutes, which is quicker than scrolling Pinterest or describing the room to someone.

What bathroom styles can I try?

Six styles are free, including Warm Minimalist, Modern Studio and Botanical Greenhouse. With the pass you get all 75+, such as Japandi, Modern Farmhouse, Coastal, Nordic, Industrial, Art Deco, Transitional and Mid-Century Modern, and you can describe your own.

Does AI bathroom design work for small bathrooms?

Yes, and small bathrooms gain the most from it, because every choice shows. Try lighter colors, larger tiles or a different vanity on your own photo and see what makes the room feel bigger before you buy anything.

Will it keep my tub, shower and window?

Yes. A style redesign keeps the room's architecture: the window, the door, the tub or shower alcove and the layout stay, so the result still looks like your bathroom. Turning a tub into a walk-in shower is a plumbing and waterproofing job, so treat that as an idea to price with your contractor.

Can I share the AI bathroom design with my contractor?

Yes. You can download every render and share it. The free design downloads at web resolution with a small watermark; with the $9.99 pass, downloads are full resolution with no watermark. It shows the style, materials and mood you want; your contractor still measures and prices the work.

Can AI generate bathroom remodel ideas?

Yes. Upload your bathroom, try a few styles and you get remodel ideas applied to your own room in minutes: different tile looks, vanity styles, colors and lighting. Seeing two or three side by side is usually the fastest way to find out what you actually like.

Can AI help with a rental bathroom?

Yes. Keep the tile and let only paint, the mirror, lighting, hardware and textiles change, and you will see what removable updates would do before you spend anything.

Is it accurate enough to plan a remodel?

It is accurate enough to choose a look, not to build from. It does not measure your bathroom or produce plans, so use it to decide the style and bring real measurements, and a contractor, to the build.

Room size calculator

What is the best AI bathroom design tool?

Look for four things: it starts from your own photo, it keeps your layout, the results look like real photos, and it tells you its free limit up front. Decoratly does all four. If you need a measured floor plan instead, a 3D planner is the better tool.

AI design tools compared

How do I use AI to design my bathroom?

Take a photo of your bathroom with your phone, upload it, pick one of the six free styles (or any of the 75+ with the pass) and look at the result about 30 seconds later. Try a second style on the same photo, then keep the one you would actually live with as a reference for your contractor.

What photo works best for a bathroom?

One taken from the doorway or a corner with every light on, showing the vanity, the tub or shower and as much floor as possible. Clear the counter, close the toilet lid and hold the phone horizontally at chest height.

Guide

AI bathroom design: a practical guide.

By Kamil Uhryn · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read

Bathroom remodels are among the most expensive projects in a home, per square foot, and among the most often regretted. The gap between what people imagine and what gets built is where the money goes. AI bathroom design closes that gap before a single tile is ordered.

The workflow is simple. Upload a photo of your bathroom, choose a style, and you see your own bathroom with the new look applied: your window, your proportions, your light. Not someone else's bathroom used as inspiration.

The original 1990s bathroom📷 Before

Where it changes decisions

Tile is where most people struggle. A sample looks different in a showroom than it does across a whole wall in a bathroom with one small window. Seeing a look on your actual walls, in your light, before you commit is the point. The same goes for paint, vanity finishes and metals.

How to use it with a contractor

Bring the render to the first meeting. A picture of the finished room heads off most misunderstandings about style and finish, and it makes the conversation about price and feasibility much faster. Your contractor will still measure, check the plumbing and price the materials; the picture just makes sure you are both picturing the same bathroom.

What to look for in an AI bathroom design tool

First, it should start from your own photo, not a stock room; results on a showroom bathroom tell you nothing about yours. Second, it should keep your layout, so the picture is something you could actually build. Third, the result should look like a photo, not a sketch. Fourth, the free limit should be clear before you upload. Decoratly gives one free design with a small watermark, then a $9.99 pass that never renews.

Getting the most from AI bathroom remodel ideas

Don't pick one result and commit. Start with the style you are drawn to, then try two or three others on the same photo. Most people discover what they want by seeing options side by side, not by deciding in the abstract. Put Japandi next to Modern Farmhouse on your own bathroom and you will know in seconds which one fits your taste and your room.

The useful part is not the AI. It is seeing your bathroom, in a style you chose, before any money changes hands. One free design will give you a clearer picture of your remodel than a week of browsing.

Who makes this

Decoratly is built and run by Kamil Uhryn and has been live since November 2023. 25,000+ rooms have been redesigned with it. Every picture on this page was made by the app from an ordinary photo, with the same model and style prompts you get.

What it can't do

  • It shows how your bathroom could look. It is not a plan, a measured drawing or a spec, so your contractor still measures and prices the job.
  • It keeps the layout from your photo. Moving the toilet, the tub or the shower is a plumbing decision for a pro, not something a picture can settle.
  • AI images can get small details wrong, like a faucet's exact shape or grout lines. Results are checked automatically and you can run a design again.
