What glam interior design is

Glam interior design is about luxury, shine and drama. Rooms are layered with reflective surfaces, rich fabrics, metallic finishes and strong contrast, with the goal of feeling like a movie set rather than a catalog. The mood is confident, a little theatrical and unapologetically decorative.

The look descends from the glamorous Hollywood interiors of the 1930s and 1940s and from the bold, high-contrast rooms designers such as Dorothy Draper created in that era, later known as Hollywood Regency. Art Deco's geometry and metallics fed into it too. Today's glam takes those ingredients and adapts them to real homes.

The key elements of glam

Shine and reflection

Mirrors, glass, lacquer, polished metal and marble bounce light around the room and are the signature of the style.

Luxurious fabrics

Velvet, silk, satin and faux fur add softness and depth. Velvet is the easiest place to start.

Metallic accents

Gold, brass, chrome and silver on lamps, frames, legs and hardware. Choose one or two metals and repeat them.

Contrast and jewel tones

Black and white, plus deep colors such as emerald, sapphire and amethyst, or a hit of hot pink.

Statement lighting

A crystal or tiered chandelier, a sunburst mirror or a sculptural lamp is usually the focal point.

Tufting and plush shapes

Channel or button tufting, rounded sofas and curved silhouettes add glamour and comfort.

Glam color palettes

Glam is not one palette but a few dependable families:

  • -Black, white and gold. The classic. A checkerboard floor, black walls or lacquer, white furniture and gold accents give the strongest, most dramatic result.
  • -Jewel tones. Emerald, deep blue, amethyst and ruby, used on a velvet sofa or a feature wall, with brass or gold to lift them.
  • -Soft glam. Blush pink, champagne, ivory and grey with silver or rose gold. Glamorous without being dark, and good for bedrooms.
  • -Monochrome luxe. One color, in several finishes (matte, velvet, gloss) with metallic accents. Calm but rich.

A common guideline is roughly 60 percent a dominant color, 30 percent a secondary color and 10 percent an accent. In a glam room the accent is often metallic. You can pull a palette from any photo you like with the color palette tool and preview wall colors with the paint color visualizer.

Glam furniture, materials and lighting

  • -Sofas and chairs: velvet upholstery, tufted backs, curved or barrel shapes, slender metal legs.
  • -Tables: mirrored, glass or acrylic tops; marble; lacquered finishes; gold or brass bases.
  • -Beds: an upholstered, tufted or high headboard, layered with silk or velvet bedding and cushions.
  • -Mirrors: oversized, sunburst or gilt-framed mirrors opposite a window or light source to double the glow.
  • -Lighting: chandeliers, crystal or brass pendants, and pairs of metallic table lamps. Use dimmers so you can set the mood.
  • -Textiles and rugs: faux fur throws, silk-look curtains to the floor, and a geometric or plush rug.
  • -Details: crystal knobs, decorative trays, coffee-table books, candles and fresh flowers.

How to get glam, room by room

Living room

Choose one bold sofa in velvet, add a mirrored or glass coffee table, and hang a chandelier. Use the mirror to carry light from the window across the room. See how your own living room changes with AI living room design.

Bathroom and entry

Small rooms are perfect for glam because you can go bold without a big commitment: a mirror with a brass frame, marble or marble-look tile, gold fixtures and a statement light. See AI bathroom design.

How to keep glam from looking tacky

Glam has a reputation for being too much. It does not have to be. A few rules keep it looking expensive:

  • -Pick a hero. One statement piece (chandelier, sofa or mirror) should lead. Everything else supports it.
  • -Limit your metals. Two at most, repeated in several places. Mixing five finishes looks chaotic.
  • -Add matte and texture. All shine and no matte surfaces feels flat. Balance gloss with velvet, wool and plain painted walls.
  • -Keep surfaces edited. A few deliberate objects on each surface look luxurious. A crowd of accessories does not.
  • -Quality over quantity. One good velvet sofa beats a room of cheap shiny pieces. Spend where you touch and sit.
  • -Layer the light. Dimmable, warm lighting makes metal and mirror glow instead of glare.

Getting the look on a budget

You do not need a big budget to add glam. The changes that do the most for the least money:

  • -Paint one wall a deep jewel tone or a glossy dark color.
  • -Add a large mirror. It is the single most effective glam accent.
  • -Swap plain cushions and throws for velvet or faux fur.
  • -Replace hardware, lamp bases and picture frames with brass or gold finishes.
  • -Add a statement light fixture or a good pair of table lamps.
  • -Look for mirrored and glass furniture second-hand.

Glam vs Art Deco vs Hollywood Regency vs modern luxe

StyleFeelSignature look
GlamLuxurious, reflective and plush.Velvet, mirrors, metallics, tufting.
Hollywood RegencyBold and theatrical. The historic root of glam.High contrast, lacquer, Chinoiserie, black and white.
Art DecoGeometric and architectural.Sunbursts, zigzags, symmetrical patterns, gold and black.
Modern luxeRestrained and streamlined.Neutrals with marble, brass and clean lines.

If glam feels like too much, look at contemporary or transitional, which borrow some of the polish with less drama.

Questions people ask

What is glam interior design?

A style built on luxury and drama: reflective surfaces, velvet and silk, metallic accents, strong contrast and statement lighting. It grew out of 1930s and 1940s Hollywood interiors.

What colors are used in glam interiors?

Classic black, white and gold; jewel tones such as emerald and sapphire; or soft blush, champagne and grey with silver or rose gold. Metallics provide the shine.

How do I make a glam room without it looking tacky?

Pick one hero piece, use no more than two metals, balance shine with matte and texture, keep surfaces edited and spend on the pieces you touch and sit on. Layer warm, dimmable lighting.

What is the difference between glam and Hollywood Regency?

Hollywood Regency is the historic style that gave glam its roots: bold, high-contrast and theatrical. Glam is the broader modern look that includes it, along with softer versions and Art Deco influences.

Can I try a glam style on my own room for free?

Yes. Decoratly lets you try 1 design from your own photo with no signup and no card, in 6 starter styles. Hollywood Glam is one of the 75+ styles in Pro. Free results are watermarked.

Is glam still in style?

Glam comes and goes, but its ingredients (mirrors, velvet, brass, statement lighting) are widely used. The current versions tend to be softer and more edited than the maximal looks of past decades.
