Clear the walls you will measure
Pull furniture back far enough to run the tape along the floor, wall to wall. Measure at floor level, not over the baseboard.

Measure the longest wall, then the one next to it
That's length and width. Round to the nearest inch. A laser measure is quicker and more accurate if you have one.

Split odd shapes into rectangles
An L-shaped room is two rectangles. Measure each one, then add the areas. The calculator does this when you add a section.

Note doors, windows and the ceiling height
You need them for paint and trim, and they decide where furniture can go. Most US ceilings are 8 to 9 ft.

The legal minimum. Most US homes follow the International Residential Code: a bedroom or other habitable room must be at least 70 sq ft and at least 7 ft in every direction, with a ceiling of at least 7 ft. Bedrooms also need an emergency exit window. Local codes can ask for more.

How do I calculate the size of a room?
Measure the length and the width in feet and multiply them. A room 12 ft long and 14 ft wide is 12 × 14 = 168 square feet. If you measured in inches, multiply and divide by 144. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, work out each one and add them.
How big is a 12 × 12 room?
144 square feet, or 13.4 square meters. It fits a queen or king bed with walking room on both sides, or a small sitting room with a sofa and a chair.
How big is a 200 square foot room?
200 sq ft is, for example, 10 × 20 ft, 12.5 × 16 ft or about 14 × 14 ft. That is a primary bedroom with a king bed and a sitting corner, or a living room for a sectional and a TV wall. It is a little larger than one US parking space, which is about 9 × 18 ft (162 sq ft).
How do I calculate the square footage of an L-shaped or irregular room?
Split the room into rectangles, multiply length by width for each one and add the results. A 12 × 10 ft main area plus an 8 × 6 ft section is 120 + 48 = 168 sq ft. For an angled wall, measure it as a rectangle plus a triangle (half the base times the height). In the calculator's Draw a shape tab you can sketch the outline, type each wall's real length and get the exact area and perimeter.
Can I draw my room to scale online?
Yes. The Draw a shape tab gives you a grid where each square is 1 foot (or 1 meter). Click the corners of your room, close the shape, then drag corners or type the real length of any wall. The area, perimeter and flooring estimate update as you go. You can also start from a rectangle, an L-shape, an alcove or an angled bay.
What is the minimum size for a bedroom?
Most US homes are built to the International Residential Code, which requires a habitable room such as a bedroom to be at least 70 square feet and at least 7 feet in every direction, with a ceiling of at least 7 feet. A bedroom also needs an emergency exit window. Your local code can add to this, so check with your building department.
Will a king bed fit in a 10 × 10 room?
Physically yes, but it is tight. A king mattress is 76 × 80 inches; in a 10 × 10 ft room (120 × 120 in) that leaves 22 inches on each side and 40 inches at the foot, with no room for nightstands. A queen (60 × 80 in) leaves 30 inches on each side, which is comfortable.
How many square feet is a 10 × 12 room?
120 square feet, or about 11.1 square meters. It is a typical secondary bedroom: a queen bed, two nightstands and a dresser.
How do I convert square meters to square feet?
Multiply by 10.764. A 10 m² room is about 107.6 sq ft and a 20 m² room is about 215 sq ft. To go the other way, divide square feet by 10.764.
Can I calculate a room's size from a picture?
Not reliably from one ordinary photo: a picture flattens depth, so the same room can look much larger or smaller depending on the lens. A tape or laser measure is accurate, and phone AR measuring apps get close. Decoratly does not measure rooms; it redesigns the room in your photo, keeping its real size and layout.
How much flooring and paint do I need for a room?
Flooring: the floor area plus about 10% for cuts and waste (more for diagonal or patterned layouts). Paint: wall area is the perimeter times the ceiling height, minus about 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window. One gallon covers about 350 to 400 sq ft per coat, and most walls need two coats. The calculator above does both.

Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere. Area is length × width, summed across sections; in Draw a shape it is the exact area of the outline you drew (the shoelace formula), with the perimeter from the wall lengths. Flooring adds 10% for cuts. Paint takes the perimeter times the ceiling height, minus about 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window, at 350 sq ft per gallon per coat, two coats. Furniture uses standard US sizes; measure your own pieces before you buy. Room-size ranges are common in US floor plans, not a standard, and the code minimum is from the International Residential Code (R304, R305).
