How designers decide where furniture goes.

Most rooms feel wrong for one of three reasons: the furniture does not face anything, there is nowhere comfortable to walk, or the pieces are the wrong size for the space. Moving the same furniture usually fixes it, and it costs nothing.
Start with the focal point
A room needs something to organize around: a TV, a fireplace, a window or the bed. When two things compete, such as a TV on one wall and a view on the other, pick the one you use most and let the other be a secondary zone. A sofa that faces nothing makes the room feel unresolved even when every piece is nice.
Think in zones, not in walls
Furniture does not have to touch the wall. A sofa with its back to the room, a rug under a group of seats or a shelf at a right angle can divide one space into two without a single wall. This is the idea behind floating the sofa, and it is why the same furniture can look bigger in a better layout.
Protect the paths
Walk the route you actually use: door to sofa, sofa to window, bed to bathroom. If a layout forces you around a table corner or through a gap you have to turn sideways for, it will annoy you every day. Clear paths matter more than any decorative detail.
Check scale last, and honestly
Scale problems hide in photos. A sofa can look fine in a picture and block the walkway in the room. This is why a picture is for choosing and a measured plan is for confirming. If the numbers say it does not fit, no layout will make it fit.
The useful part is seeing the arrangement before you move anything. Try the plan above, then try your own photo, and keep the layout you would still like in a week.
