โ„– 02How it works

From photo to new living room, in about a minute.

  1. 01

Take one photo from a corner

Stand in a corner and shoot toward the opposite wall so the sofa, the windows and as much floor as possible are in the frame. Daylight helps. A phone photo is enough.

  2. 02

    Pick a style

Start with one of the six free styles, or use any of the 75+ with the pass. You can also describe the look in your own words, and choose what may change: furniture, layout, wall color or flooring.

  3. 03

    Compare, then refine

The redesign comes back in about 30 seconds. Compare it with your photo, try another style on the same room, and with the pass change one thing at a time: a wall color, a single piece of furniture or the layout.

Help me design my living room

Not sure where to start? Try two or three styles on your own photo and keep the one that feels like home. It is quicker than a mood board, and it is your room, not a showroom.

Make a small living room feel bigger

Lighter colors, furniture on legs and fewer, larger pieces usually make a small living room feel more open. See what works on your room before you move anything.

Rearrange my living room

A style redesign can move furniture as part of the new look. To keep the pieces you own and only try a new layout, use the Rearrange tool, which comes with the 30-day pass.

Choose a wall color

See a paint color in your living room's own light before you buy a sample pot. Wall color is the cheapest change and the one that sets the mood.

Rentals and rooms you can't paint

Keep the walls and flooring as they are and let only the furniture, textiles and lighting change. Rugs, lamps and curtains change a living room more than most people expect.

Try furniture before you buy it

Add a sofa or a rug you saw in a store to your own living room photo, at the right scale and in your light. Part of the pass.

โ„– 04Living room design tips

Six things designers check in every living room.

Use them to judge any redesign, ours or anyone else's.

01

Anchor the room with the seating

The sofa and chairs decide how the room works. Look at where people sit relative to the focal point, usually a window, a fireplace or the TV, and whether the seats face each other enough for conversation.

02

Get the rug size right

A rug that is too small makes the room feel disconnected. A common guideline is a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it.

03

Layer the lighting

A single ceiling light flattens a living room. Combine general light with lamps for reading and a little accent light, and check how the room looks at night, not only by day.

04

Balance the color

A widely used rule of thumb is about 60 percent a main color, 30 percent a second color and 10 percent an accent. It keeps a bold palette from feeling chaotic.

05

Leave room to walk

Designers often allow about 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. If a layout looks great but blocks the path from the door to the sofa, it will not feel good to live in.

06

Work with a small room, not against it

In a compact living room, lighter colors, furniture on legs, a large mirror and fewer, larger pieces usually feel more spacious than many small ones.

Common living room mistakes

  • Pushing all the furniture against the walls. Pulling the sofa into the room often makes the space feel more inviting.
  • Buying furniture before checking scale. A visualization helps, but measure the room and the pieces first.
  • Choosing a style from a photo of a different room. Light, ceiling height and window size change how a style looks, which is why trying it on your own photo is more reliable.
  • Treating paint as an afterthought. Wall color sets the mood, and it is the cheapest change to test.
โ„– 06AI living room design FAQ

Living room questions, answered straight.

Can I take a picture of my living room and have AI redesign it?

Yes. Upload a photo of your living room and Decoratly redesigns that exact room in about 30 seconds, keeping your walls, windows and layout. You pick the style and choose what may change: furniture, layout, wall color or flooring.

Is AI living room design free?

Your first design is free, with no signup and no card, in one of six free styles: Warm Minimalist, Modern Studio, Hygge Haven, Botanical Greenhouse, Sunwashed Terracotta and Velvet Nightfall. It is offered in the US, Canada, the UK and several European countries, and free results carry a small watermark. The $9.99 pass gives you 30 days with all 75+ styles, the edit tools and 200 designs, paid once with nothing to cancel.

Can AI rearrange my living room?

Yes. A style redesign can move furniture as part of the new look, and the Rearrange tool, part of the pass, shows the pieces you already own in a new layout. It is a visualization, so measure walkways and furniture before you move anything heavy.

Will it change my windows, fireplace or walls?

The architecture stays: windows, doors, the fireplace, the ceiling and the shape of the room are kept, so the result still looks like your living room. Wall color and flooring can change if you allow it.

Can ChatGPT design my living room?

ChatGPT is good for ideas, a palette or a shopping list. It does not start from your actual room, so the pictures it makes are of a living room, not of yours. A photo-based tool shows those ideas on your own space.

ChatGPT interior design prompts

Is it accurate enough to plan a layout?

It is a visualization, not a floor plan. Use it to compare styles and ideas, then measure your room and the furniture before you buy anything.

Room size calculator

What photo works best for a living room?

One taken from a corner in daylight, showing the seating area, the windows and as much floor as possible. Tidy the floor first and avoid close-ups. Hold the phone horizontally at eye level.

Who makes this

Decoratly is built and run by Kamil Uhryn and has been live since November 2023. 25,000+ rooms have been redesigned with it. Every picture on this page was made by the app from an ordinary photo, with the same model and style prompts you get.

What it can't do

  • It shows how your living room could look. It is not a floor plan or a measured drawing, so measure before you buy.
  • It works from one photo. Anything the photo does not show is inferred, not known.
  • AI images can get small details wrong. Results are checked automatically and you can run a design again.
